San Gabriel

San Gabriel

A cobble-stoned promenade, lined with statuesque Royal Palms leads to a magnificent hacienda named San Gabriel de las Palmas. Originally constructed in 1529 under the orders of Hernán Cortés, it was a Franciscan monastery in colonial times and later a sugar plantation, ultimately becoming the largest of its kind in Mexico during the War of Independence. It was the scenario from which legends were written in the times of the Mexican Revolution when Emiliano Zapata made the hacienda his main headquarters.

Just 20 minutes from charming Cuernavaca, Hacienda San Gabriel is also near beautiful natural sites such as the caves of Cacahuamilpa and the rapids of the Amacuzac River. It is in easy distance of the marvelous pre-Hispanic observatory of Xochicalco and the city of Taxco, the world’s largest producer of silver.

The stone walls that support the immense barrel vaults of San Gabriel have been meticulously restored over the years lending an exotic ambience to rooms and public areas. Each distinctive and elegant guestroom, with views of different areas of the hacienda, has been decorated with period furnishings and art objects showcasing the architectural splendor of the building. The nuptial suite is the pinnacle of all.

The open-air and indoor restaurants are of the highest quality and rich flavors represent a culture proud of its roots of mixed origin. The cuisine and the hacienda’s incredible setting make it a fairytale wedding location. Terraces, fountains, shady paths, pools, waterfalls, orchards, outings on horseback, intimate dining — these are only a few of the pleasures possible at Hacienda San Gabriel.
