Escape the Cancun all-inclusive scene and go directly to tranquil beaches, ecological, archaeological and otherwise historic spots in the land of the Maya.

Cancun Cancun
This is the best starting point as it is the principal airport in the area and from there it’s very easy to reach any of the points on the tour. We suggest a direct escape to Isla Mujeres from where a return to Cancun’s nightlife, shopping and bustle is only a quick boat ride away. When planning your transportation needs, car rental will not be needed until you return from Isla Mujeres to travel onward to Merida or to Playa del Carmen if you choose to do the circuit starting south. Arrange to pick up the car at Cancun airport as it’s on the route to Merida from the ferry terminal and will be the drop off point on your return.
Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres
Regular ferries leave hourly to the island. Hotel guests can arrange ahead of time to have the hotel driver pick them up. Isla Mujeres is funky and laid back, fun for walking, shopping and hanging out at open-air cafes, day or night. A great way to get around is by golf cart, which can be rented anywhere. Mopeds are also available, and taxis are reasonably priced. Even on this tiny island, Mexico Boutique Hotels offers an excellent choice for accommodations: a few blocks off the main street, the chic retreat of Secreto is located on a sleek beach and offers a great dive program, thanks to its owner’s history in the development of diving on the island.

Isla Holbox Holbox
After Isla Mujeres, it’s back to Cancun and on to another paradise called Holbox. (Arrange to return to Cancun early, so you have plenty of time on the road to Holbox). You don’t want to take the toll highway, but the regular #180 road, which is in good condition. About 90 kilometers from Cancun, you turn right at the town of Zaragoza. A further 80 kilometers takes you to the coastal town of Chiquila. A staff member from the hotel of your choice—Xaloc Resort or CasaSandra—will meet you and begin your adventure by boat to the island of Holbox, about 15 minutes away. There is local parking, which your hotel hosts will help you arrange. This breathtaking new destination offers white sand beaches, a tranquil lagoon, four different classifications of mangroves and a vast number of bird and marine species. For those with less time, a small aircraft can take you to Holbox, providing amazing vistas and cutting your travel time by more than 75 percent.
Merida Merida
From Holbox return to highway #180D and head west to Merida. You can get back on the toll highway, if you want to make better time, at Valladolid. The trip is about four hours and, if time allows, stop along the way for a first glimpse of the ruins of Chichen Itza. To see this site thoroughly at least a full day is recommended, so plan to visit again while in Merida or on the return trip. We suggest three days in Merida where you can be pampered at the 18th century Hacienda Xcanatun, a setting that exudes the colonial history of the region and the point from which to visit the beaches at Progreso, the pyramids of Uxmal, wander market towns or discover the many cenotes (underwater caves).
Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen
The trip between Merida and Playa del Carmen is your chance to visit the many ruins of the area. Leave early to visit Chichen Itza, if you haven’t done so already, and also Coba. We suggest taking the toll-highway until Piste, then turning down to visit Chichen Itza on the toll-free highway, which is more scenic and has some interesting towns such a Valladolid. After Valladolid is Chemax, where you turn to visit Coba and continue on to Tulum and its larger-than-life ancient Mayan city by the sea. At present there is no Mexico Boutique Hotel here but we can offer suggestions if you decide not to travel to Playa del Carmen on the same day.

Playa del Carmen is the perfect base from which to visit the nearby natural parks of Xel-Ha and Xcaret, the multiple underwater caves and caverns that are great for swimming, diving, snorkeling and the impressive Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Deseo [Hotel + Lounge] and Basico are both centrally located on the Quinta Avenida and steps away from the beach, cute shops, multiple dining options and funky night clubs. However, if you seek serene seclusion in a jungle chic location, The Tides Riviera Maya is the ideal choice.

Return Trip
The drive from Playa del Carmen to the Cancun airport is about 50 minutes.
