Casa Catrina, a colonial Oaxacan family home, has been beautifully renovated to create a new hospitality venue within the heart of vibrant and colorful Oaxaca city. This quaint hotel is the brainchild of noted Oaxacan artist Rolando Rojas, an internationally renowned painter also professionally trained in architecture and restoration.
Interestingly, Rojas´ lively contemporary pieces blend seamlessly with this delightful artisan home, whose walls were painted with an ancient technique that grinds stone into dust and mixes it with a special agglutinant of nopal cactus gum.
Six guest rooms are distributed around a central courtyard, where exquisite full Oaxacan breakfasts can be enjoyed. While guest rooms are similar in design, decor in each is based on a unique color scheme that matches the artwork featured in each accommodation. Abstract paintings by noted Mexican artists become focal points among traditional wooden fixtures, local textiles and brick flooring.
El Catrín Bar provides a relaxing space with an extensive cocktail selection, as well as light snacks including national and international specialties.
The hotel´s Temascal (indigenous steam bath) is an added treat, and guests can also enjoy en suite Mixteco-Zapoteco massages.
Casa Catrina is ideal for travelers who want local attractions at their doorstep. Fine dining is steps away, and major sites of interest, such as the zocalo, art galleries and shops, are all a short walk from this charming abode.
